1. Historical research  HE

The term "historical research" describes the collection of data, except from samples, for a restricted spatial area.
The purpose of historical research of areas suspected to be brownfield is by detailed research to define all types of use of the site and its surroundings and assessing their effects on different ecological media (soil, soil atmosphere, air, surface water, etc.) as a function of the site conditions and/or describe and assess subjects of protection (man and groundwater).

Informing exploration and detailed examination follow the historical research of a brownfield-suspected area or abandoned site requiring technical activities. According to BBodSchG , experts and examination bodies which carry out such work must have the required professional qualification and reliability and the necessary technical equipment.

2. Informing exploration  OU

The type, concentration and distribution of contaminating substances in soil, soil atmosphere and water are measured at certain points and the results referenced to standard values of contaminants and specific correlations.

3. Detailed examination  DU

If the suspicion of brownfield site is confirmed by the informing exploration, the detailed examination adds knowledge to permit a final answer as to the risks (type and scope) emanating from the examined site.

4. Redevelopment investigation  SU

The purpose of the redevelopment investigation is the case-based definition of the technical and financial suitability, legal possibility and proportionality of a redevelopment version for the permanent aversion of risks, substantial disadvantages or the level of nuisance for individuals or the general public under the aspect of the use of the site as permitted by planning right. The result of the redevelopment investigation is the redevelopment concept which defines the redevelopment targets, considers the inputs by the parties affected and involved and the completion of all redevelopment work, including their monitoring. The redevelopment concept is the basis fort he development of the redevelopment plan.
